Safe things to check first
Worth a look before you call — sometimes it saves you the visit.
- 1Pull the fridge out and look at the coils on the back or behind the bottom grille. A thick blanket of dust and pet hair chokes cooling.
- 2Close the door on a dollar bill. If it slides out with no drag, the gasket has lost its seal.
- 3Put a thermometer in a glass of water in the fresh food section overnight and read it in the morning instead of trusting the door display.

How long can food stay safe while I wait for a repair?
A closed fridge holds safe temperature about four hours, and a full freezer roughly 48. Keep the doors shut and move perishables to a cooler with ice. If the unit has been warm longer than that, throw out meat and dairy.
Is it worth repairing an older refrigerator?
Depends on what failed. A fan motor, thermostat, or defrost heater on a well-built unit is usually worth doing. A failed compressor or a leak in the sealed system on a very old fridge is a harder conversation, and we'll be straight with you about it.
My fridge is loud. Is that an emergency?
Not usually, but noise tells us a lot. Buzzing often traces to the condenser fan or a start relay. A rhythmic ticking can be a fan blade hitting frost. Note when the sound happens and where it comes from before you call.

Why is frost building up inside my freezer?

Can I keep using the fridge until you get here?
If it's still holding roughly 40 degrees, yes. If water is leaking onto the floor or you smell burning, unplug it and call us. Running a compressor that's struggling can turn a small repair into a larger one.
