What "not cooling" actually tells us
A refrigerator doesn't make cold. It moves heat out of the box. So when the fresh food side goes warm, something in that chain broke: air isn't moving, frost has blocked the path, heat isn't escaping the coils, or the sealed system stopped pulling heat at all. The pattern matters more than the temperature. Freezer cold but fridge warm points one direction. Both sides warm points another. Cause family one: airflow and habits
Start with the cheap stuff. Vents inside the fridge get buried under grocery bags and casserole dishes, and cold air can't reach the shelves. A door gasket packed with syrup or crumbs lets humid summer air leak in all day. Condenser coils under or behind the unit collect dust, and in North Alabama they collect pet hair and pollen too. Dirty coils can't dump heat, so the box drifts warm. A door left ajar by a crooked drawer does the same thing. None of this requires tools. It just requires looking, and it fixes more warm refrigerators than people expect.
Cause family two: frost, fans, and defrost
Most refrigerators cool the fresh food side with air blown from the freezer. If the evaporator fan quits, the freezer stays cold and the fridge slowly warms. That's the classic split symptom. Frost is the other common culprit. When a defrost heater or thermostat fails, ice builds on the hidden coil until air can't pass through. You may hear the fan buzzing against ice, or see a solid white wall behind the freezer's back panel. Our humidity makes this worse, because every door opening adds moisture. Frost problems often come back after a thaw. That return is the diagnosis.
Cause family three: the sealed system
If both compartments are warm and the unit runs constantly, the sealed system may be the issue. That's the compressor, refrigerant, and coils working as one closed loop. A refrigerant leak, a failed compressor, or a restriction in the tubing all show the same face: it runs, it's loud or silent, and nothing gets cold. Sometimes the condenser fan seized and the compressor is overheating. This category is not a homeowner repair. It involves sealed refrigerant and stored electrical charge. Leave it to us. Why is my freezer still cold but the fridge is warm?
That split usually means air isn't moving from the freezer to the fresh food side. A stalled evaporator fan or a frost-blocked coil are the two usual reasons. Both need the back panel opened, so call us.
Should I unplug it and let it thaw?
Thawing overnight often restores cooling for a few days. That's useful information, not a repair. If cooling returns then fails again, the defrost system is the likely fault and needs testing.
Is the food still safe?
Move perishables to a cooler with ice if the fridge has been above 40 degrees for more than two hours. Food safety guidance comes from the USDA, not from us. When in doubt, throw it out.
