Repair or Replace the Refrigerator
Whether to repair or replace a 14-year-old fridge comes down to three things we can check: what's actually broken, whether the parts still exist, and what shape the rest of the unit is in. Food going soft is a symptom, not a verdict. Nobody wants to put money into a machine that quits again in six months, so here's how we think it through in plain terms.

Age matters, but not the way you think
A refrigerator's age tells us what to expect, not whether to repair it. Most home units run somewhere in the 10 to 15 year range before major parts start tiring. But we've seen 18-year-old units with nothing wrong but a stuck defrost timer, and five-year-old units with a failing sealed system. We don't write off a fridge by birthday alone. What we look at is how it's been living. Was it in a hot garage through Alabama summers? Were the condenser coils packed with dust and pet hair for a decade? A well-kept older fridge often has more life left in it than a neglected newer one.
The fault type tells us most of the story
Some failures are routine. A bad door gasket, a clogged defrost drain, a failed evaporator fan, a worn water valve, a control board that lost its mind. Those are common and the parts are ordinary. Down here, humidity makes drain and defrost problems especially frequent, and those are usually straightforward to fix. Other failures are heavier. When the sealed refrigeration system leaks or the compressor stops pumping, that's the expensive heart of the machine. On an older unit with other worn parts, that's where we start talking honestly about replacement instead. Same symptom, warm fridge, two very different conversations.
Can we still get the parts?
This is the quiet dealbreaker. Manufacturers stop making parts for discontinued models, and once the supply dries up, a simple repair becomes impossible no matter how minor it is. So we check part availability before we ever suggest a fix. If a control board for your model is discontinued everywhere, we'll tell you on the spot rather than have you wait weeks on a back order that never ships. Common brands and common models usually have good support for years. Unusual imports, built-ins, and older luxury models can be tougher. Call us with your model number and we can often check before we come out.
How we make the call during a visit
We start with what you've noticed. Is it warm on one side? Making noise? Icing up in the back? Puddling water? Then we test: temperatures in both compartments, airflow, the defrost cycle, the fans, the door seal. We want to know which system is failing, not just that something is. Once we know the fault and confirm the part exists, we lay it out for you. What's broken, what fixing it involves, and what shape the rest of the unit is in. If we see three other parts near the end of their life, you deserve to hear that before you decide anything.
When replacing is honestly the better move
We'll say it plainly. If the compressor is dead on a unit past 15 years, replacement usually wins. If the sealed system has a refrigerant leak and the cabinet is rusting or the liner is cracked, replacement wins again. If the parts are discontinued, there's no repair to have. And if you've already fixed two or three separate things in the past year, the machine is telling you something. Repair makes good sense for single, identifiable faults on a fridge that's otherwise solid, and most drain, fan, gasket, thermostat, and board issues fall right in that group. Our job is to tell you which pile yours is in.
Repair or Replace the Refrigerator — fast answers
Is it worth repairing a refrigerator over 15 years old?
Sometimes, yes. If the fault is a fan, gasket, defrost drain, or control board, and the cabinet is in good shape, repair is reasonable. If the compressor or sealed system failed, replacement usually makes more sense.
How do I know if the compressor is the problem?
Warm in both compartments, no cooling at all, and often a click-then-silence or a hum that stops. Don't open panels to check. Have a technician confirm it with proper testing before you decide anything.
What information should I have ready when I call?
The model and serial number, usually on a sticker inside the fresh food compartment or along the door frame. Also note the symptoms and roughly when they started. That helps us check part availability ahead of time.
How it works
- Step 1
Tell us the symptom
Call us or fill out the form. Describe what the appliance does and does not do. Noises, error codes, smells, puddles. Brand and model help. That detail lets us plan the visit right.
- Step 2
We diagnose in person
A technician comes to your kitchen or laundry room and tests the machine instead of guessing. Controls, heating parts, motors, seals, drains. You hear what failed and what the repair involves before work starts.
- Step 3
You approve the repair
Nothing gets replaced until you say go. Common parts are handled on site when we have them. If a part must be ordered, we tell you that up front and schedule the return.

Why homeowners call us
- Symptoms, not scriptsA washer that fills but never spins is a different problem than one that spins but never drains. We ask questions that narrow it down, then confirm with testing. Guesswork wastes parts and your afternoon.
- Independent and brand-wideWe are not tied to any manufacturer. That means we work on the big laundry and kitchen names side by side, and we recommend the repair that makes sense for your machine, not one brand's playbook.
- Regional coverageBased in Huntsville, we serve homeowners in Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, Kentucky, Mississippi, Louisiana, Arkansas, North Carolina and South Carolina. One number to call whether you are in a city neighborhood or a small town outside it.
- Straight explanationsYou will hear what part failed and why, in plain words. If a machine is worn past sensible repair, we say so. Homeowners make better decisions when nobody is hiding behind jargon.
- All major brands, gas & electricIndependent service on Whirlpool, LG, Samsung, GE, Maytag, Bosch, KitchenAid and the rest.
- Straight answersSome machines aren't worth the part, and we say so before you spend anything.
