When the Ice Maker Goes Quiet
An empty ice bin almost always comes down to one of three things: water not arriving, a freezer that isn't cold enough, or a harvest cycle that won't dump the cubes. We work through all three. What "no ice" is actually telling you
An ice maker needs water arriving on schedule, a freezer cold enough to freeze a fill in a couple of hours, and a working harvest cycle to dump the cubes. Lose any one and the bin goes empty. The pattern matters. No cubes at all often points to water never arriving, and small or hollow cubes mean water is only trickling in. Cubes that form but never drop point to the harvest side. Cloudy clumps fused together usually mean slow melting and refreezing from a door that isn't sealing. Note which one you're seeing before you call. It saves everybody time.
Cheapest suspect: the shut-off arm, switch, or a full bin
Start with the free stuff. Most ice makers have a wire arm or paddle that stops production when the bin is full. Groceries shift, a bag of frozen peas leans on it, and the arm parks in the off position. Some models use a switch or a screen setting instead, so check that ice making is turned on. Look for a bin jammed with one fused block, which fools the arm into thinking there's plenty. Empty the bin completely, reset the arm to the down position, and give it a full day. Around here, a bin that sat unused all winter often just needs one good clean-out to restart.
Water supply: filter, line, and inlet valve
No water, no ice. A clogged refrigerator water filter is the common one, especially on north Alabama well water or hard city water with a lot of mineral in it. If your dispenser water has slowed to a dribble, that's your clue. Filters need changing on a schedule, not when they fail. Next is the saddle valve or shut-off under the sink or behind the fridge, since someone may have bumped it. Past that is the fill tube and inlet valve. In a humid summer, a slow-dripping fill tube can freeze into an ice plug that blocks every fill after it. That part needs a technician.
Temperature and airflow problems
Ice needs a freezer holding around zero degrees Fahrenheit. Warmer than that and the mold never finishes freezing, so harvest never triggers. Put a thermometer in the freezer overnight and read it in the morning. If it's riding high, look at the door gasket. Gulf humidity gets into a fridge fast through a bad seal, and you'll see frost building on the back wall or around the vents. Check that nothing is blocking the vents inside the freezer compartment. Then pull the fridge out and vacuum the dust off the condenser coils underneath or behind. Warm kitchens and heavy dust make the whole system work harder, and ice suffers first.

We meter the inlet valve and check whether it opens at all when the fill signal fires. We measure actual fill volume, thaw frozen fill tubes properly instead of chipping at them, and test the mold heater and harvest motor. We read the sealed-system behavior to tell a defrost fault from a low-charge problem, because those two look identical from the front. We also check water line pressure, since a line that's fine for the sink may be too weak for the fridge. Anything behind a panel, near the compressor, or involving refrigerant is our job, not yours. Give it 24 hours. Run several glasses of water first to purge air from the line, because air pockets cause short fills and hollow cubes. If the bin is still empty after a full day, something else is wrong.
Why did my ice maker quit right after a power outage?
Outages are common in storm season here. Some units need the shut-off arm cycled up and down to restart, or a reset button pressed. If the freezer thawed and refroze, a fill tube ice plug may have formed.
Is it worth repairing an ice maker in an older fridge?
