Condenser Coils
If your fridge runs longer than it used to and the ice cream has gone soft, start by cleaning the condenser coils. The kitchen may also feel warm near the side of it. Nothing has broken yet, but something is off. Nine times out of ten we find the same thing back there, a mat of dust and pet hair packed against the coils. Cheapest problem to prevent, one of the most expensive to ignore.

What dust on the coils actually does
Condenser coils dump heat out of your fridge into your kitchen. When dust, lint, and pet hair blanket them, that heat has nowhere to go, so the compressor keeps running to make up for it. Run times stretch from minutes to hours. The whole system sits hotter than it was designed to sit, day after day. In north Alabama humidity that dust turns into a damp felt that clings instead of blowing off. Over months we see burnt-smelling compressors, failed condenser fan motors, control boards cooked by heat. The food-safety part comes first, though. A hot condenser means a fridge that drifts above 40 degrees.
The five-minute habit
Unplug the refrigerator. That is the whole safety step, and it matters. Pull off the front toe-kick grille if yours snaps off by hand, or slide the fridge out and look at the lower back. You are looking for a black finned panel and a small fan. Vacuum with a brush attachment or a coil brush, working gently along the fins and not across them so you do not bend them. Get the fan blades and the floor underneath while you are down there. Wipe the door gasket with warm soapy water at the same time. Plug it back in. Done. No panels unscrewed, no wiring touched, no tools beyond a vacuum.
How often, honestly
Twice a year covers most homes, and spring and fall are easy to remember. If you have a shedding dog or cat, make it every three months. Same if the fridge sits on carpet, near a laundry area, or in a garage or a Gulf-humid sunroom where dust and moisture combine. Homes with window units and ceiling fans move more dust than you would think. Give the fridge a two-inch gap from the wall so the hot air has somewhere to travel, and check that nothing stored on top is blocking vents. Write the date on a piece of tape inside the toe-kick. Future you will appreciate it.
Signs cleaning will not fix it anymore
Call us instead of vacuuming if the fridge runs constantly and never clicks off. Same for a compressor hot enough you would not want to hold your hand on it, or a sharp electrical smell behind the unit. Frost building on the back wall of the freezer, water pooling in the crisper drawers, or a freezer that works while the fresh-food side goes warm all point past coil care. A clicking sound every few minutes followed by silence usually means a start component or the compressor. Rattling that stops when you nudge the fridge is often the condenser fan. Those are ours to open up, not yours.

Do I really have to unplug it first?
Yes. There is a fan back there with moving blades and live wiring nearby. Unplugging takes two seconds and removes the risk entirely. The fridge will hold temperature fine for the few minutes you need.
Can I use a garden hose or compressed air?
Skip the water. Compressed air just relocates the dust into your kitchen and deeper into the cabinet. A vacuum with a brush attachment pulls it out instead, and a flexible coil brush helps you reach the back rows.
My fridge has coils I cannot see. Now what?
Some newer models tuck the condenser behind a sealed rear panel. Vacuum whatever vents you can reach and leave the rest alone. Call us and we will handle the enclosed ones during a service visit.
