Deciding a Dishwasher's Fate

Whether a dead dishwasher is worth fixing comes down to three things we can check on the call: what failed, how old the machine is, and whether the part still exists. Standing water in the bottom, gritty dishes, a unit that hums and does nothing, we see all of it. You deserve a straight answer instead of a sales pitch. Here's how we think it through, same as we would standing in your kitchen.

Age matters, but not the way you think

A dishwasher's age tells us what parts are still made and how the rest of the machine is holding up. Under about seven years, most faults are worth repairing. Past ten, we look harder. We check the tub for cracks, the door seal for rot, and the racks for tines rusted through. In our humid North Alabama summers, a dishwasher that sits closed and damp all day grows mold along the gasket and the rack coating rusts early. If the shell and racks are sound, age by itself rarely rules out a repair.

The fault type is the real decision

Some failures are simple swaps. A drain pump, a float switch, a door latch, a clogged inlet valve, a broken spray arm, a heating element that quit heating. Common parts, straightforward work. Other failures sit deeper: a leaking tub seam, a corroded sump, a control board and motor going out together, or water damage that already ruined the cabinet floor underneath. When the fix means taking most of the machine apart to reach one bonded piece, the math shifts. We tell you which category you're in before anything gets ordered.

Can we still get the part?

Parts availability quietly decides a lot of these calls. Mainstream models built in the last decade usually have pumps, valves, and latches on the shelf. Older units, discontinued lines, and some imported models are a different story. Sometimes a control board is backordered with no date, or it's only sold as a whole assembly. We check availability before we recommend a repair, because a machine waiting weeks on a part isn't a repair, it's a countdown. If a part is truly gone, we say so plainly and you can plan around it.

What we actually do on the visit

We start with what you saw. Standing water, no spray, no heat, a tripped breaker, a smell. Then we run a cycle and watch. We listen for the drain pump, feel the fill, check that the spray arms turn, and look under the unit for old water stains on the subfloor. We pull the filter and look at what's in it, because a shredded gasket or plastic bits tell a story. Once we know the failed part, we tell you the fault, the parts situation, and whether we'd fix it in our own kitchen.

When we'd tell you to replace it

There are honest cases where replacement wins. A cracked inner tub leaking from a seam. A machine that has already soaked and warped the cabinet base. Rust bleeding through the door panel from the inside. Two or three separate major parts failed at once on an older unit, or a discontinued board with no supply. One more thing worth counting: if a dishwasher has already had several unrelated repairs, that pattern usually keeps going. We'd rather tell you to shop than sell you work that buys a few months.

Deciding a Dishwasher's Fate — fast answers

Is standing water in the bottom always a big repair?

Usually not. A little water in the sump is normal. Full standing water most often means a clogged filter, a blocked drain hose, a plugged air gap, or a failed drain pump. Those are common repairs and easy to reach.

My dishwasher smells musty. Is it broken?

Often it's buildup, not a fault. Humid air behind a closed door grows mildew on the gasket and in the filter. Clean the filter and the seal, then leave the door cracked after cycles. If the smell comes right back, call us.

How do I know if my model still has parts?

We look it up by the model number on the tub rim, inside the door. Availability varies by part and by model year. We check before recommending a repair so you're not waiting on something that may never ship.

How it works

  1. Step 1

    Tell us the symptom

Call us or fill out the form. Describe what the appliance does and does not do. Noises, error codes, smells, puddles. Brand and model help. That detail lets us plan the visit right.

  2. Step 2

    We diagnose in person

A technician comes to your kitchen or laundry room and tests the machine instead of guessing. Controls, heating parts, motors, seals, drains. You hear what failed and what the repair involves before work starts.

  3. Step 3

    You approve the repair

Nothing gets replaced until you say go. Common parts are handled on site when we have them. If a part must be ordered, we tell you that up front and schedule the return.
