What the minerals actually do inside your machines
Hard water carries calcium and magnesium. Every time water heats up, those minerals drop out and stick to whatever is closest. In a dishwasher that means the heating element, the spray arm holes, and the water inlet screen. In a washer it coats the valve and the drum. In a water heater it settles on the bottom as a crusty layer. Scale does not conduct heat well, so the element works longer and hotter to reach the same temperature. That shortens the element's life and drives up run times. Spray holes clog, and dishes come out dirty even on the long cycle. None of this happens overnight. It happens over years, quietly.
The habit that prevents most of it
Descale on a schedule. For a dishwasher, run an empty hot cycle with a cup of plain white vinegar in a bowl on the top rack, or use a packaged descaler made for dishwashers. Do not mix vinegar with detergent or bleach. For a washer, run the clean-washer cycle if it has one. For a coffee maker, follow the vinegar-and-rinse steps in the manual. Also wipe the dishwasher door gasket and the filter at the bottom of the tub. Pull the filter, rinse it under the tap, put it back. That is it. No panels, no tools, no wiring.
How often, honestly
In our part of the Southeast, once a month is a good rhythm for a dishwasher filter rinse. Descale every one to three months depending on how hard your water runs. If you see white crust on the kitchen faucet aerator, lean toward monthly. Washing machines do fine with a clean cycle monthly. Coffee makers need it more often than people think, every few weeks with daily use. Ice makers benefit from a periodic bin cleanout, since mineral haze makes cloudy, small cubes. Write it on the calendar the same day you change the HVAC filter. Pairing the chore with one you already do makes it stick.
Signs prevention is no longer enough
Some symptoms mean scale has already caused wear. Dishes coming out gritty and wet after a full cycle can point to a failing heating element or a blocked circulation path. A water heater that pops and rumbles has a sediment bed on the bottom. A washer that fills slowly, or not at all, may have a mineral-choked inlet valve. Cloudy, hollow ice cubes that stick together often mean a restricted fill line. A dishwasher that leaks at the door after years of crusty gasket buildup usually needs a new seal. Descaling will not reverse any of that. That is the point to call us and have someone look at the part itself.

Will a water softener really help my appliances?
Softened water cuts new scale buildup, so elements and valves stay cleaner longer. It will not remove scale that is already there. If your machines already show symptoms, treat the buildup or the worn part first, then soften going forward.
Is vinegar safe to use in my dishwasher?
Occasional use in an empty hot cycle is a common practice. Do not use it every week, and never mix it with bleach or detergent. If your manual warns against acids, use a packaged dishwasher descaler instead.
Why do my glasses look cloudy even with new detergent?
That film is usually mineral deposit, not soap. Try a rinse aid and a descaling cycle. If the cloudiness stays after that, the water may not be heating enough, which points to an element or thermostat issue.
