Your Dishwasher Has a Filter. Here's Why That Matters
If your dishes come out gritty and the dishwasher smells swampy when you open it, start by pulling the filter out of the bottom of the tub. Nine times out of ten, nobody ever has. You run the load again with more soap and nothing changes, because there's a screen down there that's been collecting food since the day the machine was installed. Here's what that does.

What Happens When Nobody Touches the Filter
The filter sits in the floor of the tub, usually under the bottom rack. It catches food so debris doesn't get pumped back onto your plates. When it clogs, water can't drain through it fast, and the pump works harder against the blockage. Wash pressure drops, so dishes come out with film and grit still baked on. Trapped food rots between cycles, and in our humidity it goes sour quick. That smell you've been chasing with tablets and citrus packets is coming from a screen you can lift out with your fingers. Leave it long enough and the sludge migrates into the drain hose and the pump housing. Then it's no longer a five-minute job.
The Habit That Prevents All of It
Open the door and pull out the bottom rack. Look at the floor of the tub for a round plastic cylinder, sometimes with an arrow or a small handle on it. Twist it counterclockwise a quarter turn and lift straight up. There's often a flat mesh plate underneath that lifts out too. Rinse both under hot tap water, and use a soft dish brush on the stuck-on stuff. Never a wire brush. It tears the mesh. Wipe out the empty well with a paper towel while you're down there. Drop everything back in, twist until it seats, and you're done. Five minutes, no tools, no panels.
How Often Is Actually Enough
For most Southeastern households running the dishwasher four or five times a week, once a month is a reasonable rhythm. Big family, lots of cooking, or you don't scrape plates first? Make it every two weeks. Empty nesters running a light load twice a week can stretch to every six or eight weeks. Pick something you'll remember, like the first Saturday of the month or the same day you change the HVAC filter. If you cook a lot of rice, pasta, or greens, check sooner. Starchy food turns to paste in there. So does grease, which firms up as the tub cools and coats the mesh in a film water won't rinse off.
Signs You're Past Prevention
Standing water in the bottom of the tub after a finished cycle means drainage is restricted. That's the filter, the drain hose, or the pump, and after long neglect it's often all three. White or gray grit on clean glasses tells you debris is being recirculated. A rotten smell that comes back within a day of cleaning means buildup somewhere past the filter. Longer cycles, dishes still cold and wet at the end, or a grinding noise during drain are worth a call rather than another cleaning tablet. And if your bottom rack comes out dirtier than the top, the lower spray arm is probably starved for pressure.
When to Call Us Instead
Cleaning the filter is safe homeowner territory. Anything past that isn't. Don't pull the lower spray arm apart, don't remove the sump cover, and don't run a snake down the drain line. You can crack plastic that isn't sold separately. If water stays in the tub after you've cleaned the filter, if the unit hums but never fills, or if you see water on the floor near the toe kick, stop running it. Do all dishwashers have a filter I can remove?
Most made in the last fifteen years or so do. Older units often used a hard food disposer instead, which grinds debris automatically. If nothing in the tub floor twists out, check your model's manual before you go prying at anything.
Can I put the filter in the dishwasher to clean it?
No. It has to be scrubbed by hand under running water. The whole point of the thing is that it holds debris the wash cycle can't remove. Hot tap water and a soft brush do the job in a couple of minutes.
Will vinegar or a cleaning tablet fix the smell instead?
Not if the filter is loaded. Those products rinse surfaces, but they won't lift packed food out of the mesh. Clean the filter first, then use a tablet if you want. Usually the odor is gone before you get that far.
