What "not cleaning" actually tells us
Dirty dishes mean the machine is short on water, heat, or spray pressure. It can run a full cycle and sound perfectly normal while doing none of those well. So we read the pattern first. Food stuck on the top rack only points at a spray arm or a blocked feed tube. Gritty film on everything says the filter is clogged or a drain problem is recirculating dirty water. White chalky haze on glassware usually isn't a broken part at all, it's hard water and detergent. In North Alabama hard water is common, so that last one comes up a lot.
Cause family one: filters, spray arms, and loading
Start here, because it costs nothing but time. The bottom filter cylinder twists out on most machines. Rinse it under the tap and scrub the mesh with a soft brush. Pull the lower spray arm off (it usually unclips or unscrews by hand) and poke each hole clear with a toothpick, then check the upper arm the same way. Now look at how the thing is loaded. Tall pots blocking the middle tower, nested bowls, a cookie sheet standing across the front, all of that shadows the spray. Run one cycle after cleaning before you assume anything is broken.
Cause family two: detergent, water hardness, and water temperature
Old detergent loses its punch. Powder that has clumped up in a humid laundry room won't dissolve at all. If you use pods, make sure a big plate isn't blocking the dispenser door, since the pod has to fall free early in the cycle. Add rinse aid if the reservoir is empty. It helps a lot with film and spotting. Water temperature matters too, so run the kitchen sink hot before you start the cycle and the machine won't fill with cold pipe water. If a hardness film keeps coming back after all that, run a citric-acid dishwasher cleaner through empty and you'll know fast.
Cause family three: parts that are actually failing
When the basics are clean and it still fails, we're looking at hardware. A weak wash pump or worn impeller won't build spray pressure. A stuck inlet valve underfills, so the arms only dribble. A failed heating element leaves the water lukewarm and grease never lets go. A cracked spray arm or split feed tube behind the tub bleeds off pressure where you can't see it, and a drain problem leaves dirty water sitting in the sump so the machine washes with it. None of these are guesswork jobs. They need testing, not parts swapping.

We pull the machine out, check fill volume against the cycle spec, and measure water temperature right at the tub. We test the inlet valve and heating circuit with a meter and listen to the wash motor under load. The sump and check valve get inspected for grease packing. We look at the drain hose loop and the air gap too, since a bad drain path hides behind a lot of these calls, and we check the door seal and float switch. All of that means opening panels and touching wiring, which is where a homeowner should stop and call us.

Why are only my top-rack dishes coming out dirty?
Usually the upper spray arm is clogged, or the feed tube that carries water up the back of the tub is blocked or cracked. Clean out the arm's holes first. If dishes stay dirty, the tube or the pressure needs checking.
Is white film on glasses a broken dishwasher?
Often not. Chalky haze is typically hard water minerals and low rinse aid. Fill the rinse aid reservoir and run a citric-acid cleaner cycle empty. If it won't wipe off, that's etching, which is permanent glass damage rather than residue.
Should I pre-rinse my dishes?
Scrape off bones, peels, and heavy sauce, but don't rinse them spotless. Modern detergents need some soil to work against. Big food chunks are what clog filters and spray holes, so scraping is the step that helps.
