What the symptom is actually telling you
A gas burner needs gas at the port, a spark to light it, and clean holes so the flame can travel around the ring. Listen to what your ear tells you. Clicking with no flame usually means gas isn't reaching the spark, or the spark is landing somewhere it shouldn't. No clicking at all points at the igniter circuit or the switch inside the knob. A weak flame on one side of the ring means clogged ports. One dead burner while the others work is almost always local to that burner, and all burners dead at once points to power or gas supply for the whole range. That first clue narrows the job fast.
Boilovers and clogged burner ports
This is the most common cause and the cheapest fix. Sugar, tomato sauce, milk, grease, any of it dries hard inside the little slits around the burner ring. Gas can't get out evenly, so the flame won't catch near the igniter. In our part of Alabama, humidity keeps spilled residue tacky longer, so it packs into ports instead of flaking off. Signs to look for: the burner lights slowly, lights on one side only, or the flame sputters and pops. You may see orange or yellow tips where you should see blue. A burner that ran fine for years and quit right after a big pot boiled over is telling you exactly what happened.
Igniter trouble and moisture
Each burner has a small ceramic electrode that sparks. Wet, cracked, or coated in cooked-on grease, that spark goes weak or jumps to the wrong place. Damp gets in after cleaning, after a spill, or just from summer air in a kitchen where the AC runs hard. A classic sign is all burners clicking at once when you turn one knob. The spark module is firing, but one electrode isn't doing its share. Clicking that keeps going after the flame lights is another. Sometimes a range just needs a day to dry out. If the clicking is still weak or dead after that, the electrode or module needs testing.
Safe checks you can do right now
Turn the burner off first and let the grates cool all the way. Lift off the grate and burner cap, then look at the ring of ports. If you see crust, scrub it with a stiff brush and warm soapy water and dry it fully. A straightened paper clip clears a plugged slit. Never a toothpick, which can snap off inside. Wipe around the ceramic igniter with a dry cloth. Don't soak it. Set the cap back on flat and square, because a tilted cap by itself can stop a light. Check that the range is plugged in. Electric ignition needs power even on a gas stove. Stop there. Skip anything behind a panel or involving the gas line.

Is it safe to keep lighting the burner with a match?
A one-time light with a long match is common practice, but if the electric ignition has failed, gas may pool before you get it lit. Turn the knob off, let the air clear, and get it repaired rather than making a habit of it.
Why do all my burners click when I only turn one knob?
One spark module usually fires every electrode at once, and that's normal on a lot of ranges. If one burner still won't light while the others do, the trouble is that burner's ports, electrode, or valve.
Could a bad smell mean something worse?
A faint whiff while lighting is normal. A steady rotten-egg smell is not. Shut the burner off, open windows, leave the house, and call your gas utility from outside before you call us.
