One Cold Element on an Electric Cooktop

One cold burner on an electric cooktop usually comes down to the element, its receptacle, or the switch behind the knob, and all three are replaceable parts. You turn the knob, the light comes on, and the pan never gets warm. Sometimes the element glows for a minute and then quits. Here's how we trace it.

What a cold element is telling you

An electric cooktop element needs a good heating coil and a switch feeding it power. When one burner is dead and the rest work fine, the problem is almost always in that burner's own circuit rather than the whole cooktop. When several burners quit at the same time, we start looking at the power feed to the appliance. Pay attention to details. Does the indicator light come on? Does the element glow anywhere at all, even faintly, or does it heat and then drop out after a few minutes? Each of those points somewhere different, and it saves us time on the phone.

Cause family one: the element or its connection

On coil-style cooktops, the element plugs into a receptacle under the trim ring. Spills cook onto those contacts, the metal pits and burns, and the connection goes intermittent. In our humid part of the country, moisture speeds that corrosion along. A burned receptacle is one of the more common things we find. The coil itself can fail too, and usually you'll see a blister, a split, or a bright scorched spot on the tube. On smooth-top ranges the radiant element sits under the glass and can't be swapped by hand, but it fails the same way: the coil opens up and heat stops.

Cause family two: the switch or control

The infinite switch is the part your knob turns. It dials power up and down, and it also cycles the element on and off to hold a temperature. When contacts inside it wear or arc, you get a burner that never comes on, or one that runs full blast with no low setting, or one that heats and then dies as the switch overheats. Sometimes the indicator light works even though the element side of the switch is dead, which fools people into thinking the element is bad. On touch-control smooth tops, the fault may be in the control board or the ribbon connections.

Safe checks you can do right now

Unplug the range if you can reach the cord, or shut off the breaker. Then look. On a coil cooktop, lift the element straight out and inspect the two prongs and the receptacle for black scorching or melted plastic. Reseat it firmly and try again. Swap a working element of the same size into the dead position. If it heats, the element was the problem. If it stays cold, the switch or wiring is. Check that the breaker hasn't half-tripped. Stop there. Don't remove the cooktop surface, don't unscrew the control panel, and don't probe wiring with power on.

What we do that you can't from the outside

We test instead of guess. With power off, we measure resistance across the element to see if the coil is open, and we check the switch terminals for continuity through their range of travel. We inspect the receptacle wiring behind the panel, where heat damage often hides in the insulation. On smooth tops we verify the control board is actually calling for heat before we condemn an element under glass. We look for the reason it failed, whether that's a loose terminal that arced or corrosion from a long-ago boil-over. Then we bring the right part for your model and confirm every burner cycles properly. Call us and tell us what you're seeing.

One Cold Element on an Electric Cooktop — fast answers

Can I keep using the cooktop with one dead burner?

Usually yes, if nothing smells hot and you see no scorching or sparking. If you see arcing, smell burning plastic, or the element sparks when you move a pan, shut off the breaker and stop using it.

Why does my burner heat up, then shut off?

That's typical of a worn infinite switch cycling out. It can also be a loose, corroded element connection that breaks contact once the metal expands with heat. Both are repairable. Note how long it runs before quitting, because it helps us narrow things down.

All my burners are dead but the oven works. Why?

Electric ranges often use two power legs. Losing one can kill the cooktop while the oven or clock still runs. We check the breaker, the cord, and the terminal block for a burned connection.

How it works

  1. Step 1

    Tell us the symptom

Call us or fill out the form. Describe what the appliance does and does not do. Noises, error codes, smells, puddles. Brand and model help. That detail lets us plan the visit right.

  2. Step 2

    We diagnose in person

A technician comes to your kitchen or laundry room and tests the machine instead of guessing. Controls, heating parts, motors, seals, drains. You hear what failed and what the repair involves before work starts.

  3. Step 3

    You approve the repair

Nothing gets replaced until you say go. Common parts are handled on site when we have them. If a part must be ordered, we tell you that up front and schedule the return.
