Spring: pollen, storms, and clogged airflow
Yellow pollen coats everything here, including the condenser coils under and behind your refrigerator. A dusty coil traps heat, so the compressor runs longer and cools less. Spring storms bring power blips too, and those flickers can scramble control boards on washers, dishwashers, and fridges. Sometimes the machine just sits there dead, or stuck mid-cycle. For spring, vacuum the fridge grille and the floor vent behind it, pull the lint screen and wash it in warm water, then clear leaves or mulch away from any outdoor dryer vent flap. Confirm the flap actually swings open when the dryer runs. Call us if cooling still lags.
Summer: the season refrigerators lose
July is when we run the most refrigerator calls. A fridge doesn't make cold. It moves heat out of the box into your kitchen, and when that kitchen is already 80 degrees and humid, the job gets harder. Symptoms spike: ice cream soft, milk sour early, water pooling in the crisper, a compressor that never shuts off. Garage and porch units struggle worst because the air around them is hotter still. Humidity means more condensation, so freezer drain lines ice over and drip into the fridge below. Keep two inches of clearance behind the unit and don't stack boxes on top. If door gaskets feel loose or sticky, wipe them with mild soap and water.
Late summer: dryers, washers, and wet air
Damp air holds less capacity to absorb more moisture, so your dryer works longer in August than it did in February on the same load. Long cycles overheat the machine and cook the heating element or thermal fuse. Every year we get a run of no-heat dryers once the humidity settles in. Washers suffer a different way. Front-load door seals stay wet, and mildew grows fast in this climate. That's the sour towel smell. Leave the door cracked between loads and wipe the seal dry. Run smaller dryer loads so air moves through the drum, and have the vent duct cleared if cycles have crept past an hour.
Fall and winter: cold snaps and holiday overload
Southeastern winters swing hard, a 70-degree Tuesday and a 22-degree Thursday in the same week. Garage refrigerators and freezers get confused by that. When the surrounding air drops too low, the cooling system may barely cycle and the freezer side thaws. Unheated laundry rooms bring frozen or split supply lines and slow-filling washers. Then Thanksgiving hits and the oven runs eight hours straight after sitting idle since spring. Bake elements and igniters usually fail on that first heavy day. Test your oven two weeks before the holiday. Set it to 350 and see if it gets there and holds. Better to find out early. Reach us.
A short pre-season checklist you can safely do
None of this needs tools or removing panels. Twice a year, vacuum refrigerator coils and the area behind the unit. Check that the dryer's outside vent flap opens and that no lint is packed at the hood. Wash the lint screen with soap to remove fabric softener film. Take a flashlight and look under the washer and dishwasher for damp spots or rust trails. Wipe door gaskets on the fridge, washer, and dishwasher. A new hum, buzz, or rattle that only shows up on hot days is worth telling us about. Skip anything involving gas connections or interior electrical parts. That's our side of the work.
