Dryer Vent Cleaning
If your dryer needs two cycles to finish a load, start with the vent line, not the machine. Clothes come out warm and still damp because the air has nowhere to go. Nothing has broken yet. In North Alabama humidity, a clogged vent goes from annoying to unsafe faster than most folks expect, and here is what we run into in the field.

What Lint Does to a Vent Line Over Time
Lint does not pack in all at once. It coats the inside of the duct a little at a time, and damp Southern air makes it stick instead of blowing on out. The pipe gets narrower. Now the dryer has to run longer to push moisture out, which means it runs hotter, load after load. That heat wears on the heating element, the thermostat and the drum bearings. We open a lot of dryers that failed early for one reason: the machine was fine, it was just choking. And lint burns. A hot, packed duct sitting near a heat source is the fire risk your inspector warned you about.
The Habit That Prevents Most of It
Clean the lint screen every single load. Not most loads. Every one. Once a month, pull the screen all the way out and rinse it under hot water. If water pools on the mesh instead of running through, dryer sheet residue has sealed it up, so scrub it with a soft brush and dish soap. Then look behind the dryer. If the flex duct is crushed against the wall or kinked into an S shape, straighten it and pull the dryer out an inch or two. Step outside while the dryer runs and watch the vent hood. You should feel steady warm air.
How Often the Whole Vent Needs Cleaning
Once a year is the baseline for most households. Go to every six months if you have a long duct run, more than one elbow, a rooftop or crawlspace vent, a big family doing daily loads, or pets that shed. Homes here with vents running through a hot attic collect more, because moist air cools and lint sticks where it condenses. Drying heavy towels and bedding often? Lean toward twice a year. Mark it on a calendar next to your HVAC filter change so it actually happens.
Signs Prevention Time Has Passed
When you see these, call for service instead of reaching for a brush. Clothes that come out hot to the touch but still wet. A cycle running twice as long as it used to. A burning or musty smell while it dries. A dryer top too hot to rest your hand on, or a laundry room that feels like a sauna. A vent hood flap outside that never opens. Also a dryer that shuts itself off mid-cycle and restarts later, which usually means a safety thermostat tripping on high heat. Any of that means the duct is blocked or the machine is already stressed.
When to Bring Us In
We handle the parts of this a homeowner should leave alone: clearing long or elevated duct runs, checking airflow at the hood, and testing whether a dryer that overheated has damaged parts inside. Do not open panels yourself to get at a heating element or thermostat. Do not touch a gas dryer's supply line. If your dryer keeps tripping on heat, we look at the vent and the machine together, because fixing one and not the other just repeats the problem. Call us and tell us what you noticed, how long cycles are running, and whether you smell anything. That gets us to the right answer faster.
Dryer Vent Cleaning — fast answers
Can I clean the vent myself with a brush kit?
A short, straight duct you can reach behind the dryer is reasonable to brush out. Long runs, attic routes and roof vents are not. Those need proper tools and someone who can confirm airflow when the job is done.
Do dryer sheets really clog the lint screen?
They do. Residue builds an invisible film on the mesh that blocks air even when the screen looks clean. Rinse the screen under hot water once a month. If the water beads up instead of passing through, scrub it.
Is flexible foil duct a problem?
Ridged flex duct traps lint in every groove, and it crushes easily behind the dryer. Rigid or semi-rigid metal duct moves air better and stays cleaner. Vinyl duct should be replaced no matter what shape it's in.
How it works
- Step 1
Tell us the symptom
Call us or fill out the form. Describe what the appliance does and does not do. Noises, error codes, smells, puddles. Brand and model help. That detail lets us plan the visit right.
- Step 2
We diagnose in person
A technician comes to your kitchen or laundry room and tests the machine instead of guessing. Controls, heating parts, motors, seals, drains. You hear what failed and what the repair involves before work starts.
- Step 3
You approve the repair
Nothing gets replaced until you say go. Common parts are handled on site when we have them. If a part must be ordered, we tell you that up front and schedule the return.
