What a Two-Cycle Dryer Is Actually Telling You
A dryer doesn't dry clothes with heat alone. It heats air, pulls moisture into that air, then pushes the wet air outside. Break the pushing part and the heat just sits in the drum cooking damp laundry. That's why long dry times point at airflow. Clues that back it up: the drum feels very hot when you open it, clothes come out hot but heavy, the laundry room turns muggy, or the cabinet is warm to the touch. A truly dead heating element gives you cool air and cold clothes instead. Different symptom, different repair.
Cause One: The Lint Trap and the Slot Under It
Start with the cheapest thing. Pull the lint screen, clean it every load, and hold it up to the light. If it looks hazy, or water beads on it instead of running through, dryer sheet residue has sealed the mesh. Wash it with warm water and a soft brush, then let it dry all the way. Now look down into the slot the screen sits in. Lint packs down there and mats up like felt where you can't see it from above. A vacuum crevice tool reaches most of it. That fix alone puts a lot of dryers back on a single cycle.
Cause Two: The Vent Line and the Outside Flap
Behind the dryer runs a duct out to an exterior wall, and two things go wrong there. The flexible hose gets crushed when somebody pushes the dryer back tight, kinking the path down to about the width of a straw. Or the run itself is packed with lint, which happens most in long duct routes through crawlspaces and attics. Then go outside. Find the vent hood and run the dryer on air-fluff. You should feel a steady push of air with the flap standing open. A weak puff, a flap glued shut with lint, or a bird nest behind the louvers explains everything. Humid summers here make lint sticky and clingy.
Cause Three: Load Habits and Where the Dryer Sits
Some fixes aren't repairs at all. Overloading is common, and if clothes can't tumble and separate, air can't reach them. A big comforter holds water like a sponge, so split the load. Check your washer too. If it isn't spinning fully, clothes go in soaked and the dryer takes the blame. Run a spin-only cycle and see how heavy the load comes out. And a dryer shut in a closet or crammed in a tight basement corner may be breathing its own damp air over and over. It needs a source of makeup air. Crack the door and compare dry times.
Cause Four: Parts That Need a Technician
If airflow tests fine and the loads are reasonable, the trouble is inside the machine. A worn blower wheel slips on its shaft and turns slower than the motor. A cracked or clogged blower housing leaks air. Thermostats and thermal cutoffs can drop the dryer into a lower heat range without shutting it off. On gas models, a weak flame or an igniter that keeps cycling cuts heat time on every load. Those checks mean pulling panels and testing live components, and we don't ask homeowners to do that. It can. Packed lint holds heat right where heat shouldn't sit. A dryer running hot with long dry times deserves attention soon, not next season. Clean the duct yourself or have it cleaned professionally.
How often should the vent line be cleaned?
Once a year works for most homes. Go more often if you have a long duct run, a big household, or a lot of pet hair. Damp Southern air packs lint tighter, so don't stretch the interval.
My dryer is hot but clothes stay wet. Is the heater bad?
Usually not. A bad heater gives you cool air and cold clothes. A hot drum with wet laundry means airflow is blocked and the moisture has nowhere to go. Check the lint slot and the outside vent flap first.
