What "runs but stays cold" actually tells us
A microwave is doing two jobs at once. One side handles the lights, fan, turntable and timer. The other side makes the microwave energy that heats your food. When the first side works and the second doesn't, the trouble is in the high-voltage half. That's actually useful information. It rules out the control board display, the plug and the outlet, and it means your fix isn't a setting somewhere. Before you sacrifice a third bag of popcorn, understand that the cook circuit is the suspect and the rest is noise.
Cause one: the door switches
We start here because it's the cheapest and most common culprit. There's a small stack of switches in the door latch that tell the machine the door is truly shut. If one fails in the wrong position, the unit still lights up and spins, but it won't fire the cook circuit. Alabama kitchens are hard on these things. Humidity, grease vapor off the fryer, and years of a door bumped shut with an elbow all wear down the latch hooks. If the door feels loose, rattles, or needs a shove to register, that's a strong hint.
Cause two: the high-voltage parts
Behind the panel is the group that makes heat: the magnetron, a high-voltage diode, a capacitor, and a fuse dedicated to that circuit. Any one can quit while the rest of the microwave acts completely normal. A blown diode is the classic no-heat with a loud hum. A dead magnetron is usually quiet and just cold. These parts hold a dangerous charge even with the cord out of the wall, so we'll say it plainly. Do not open the cabinet. That charge can injure you long after you've unplugged it.
Cause three: heat trips and control faults
Microwaves have thermal cutouts that kill the cook function when the cavity or magnetron gets too hot. A clogged vent will do it. So will a greasy filter under an over-range unit, or a summer kitchen where the AC is losing the fight. Sometimes the cutout resets and the thing heats fine for a week, then quits again. Intermittent no-heat is a real pattern, not you imagining things. On the control side, a relay that won't close anymore will run the timer and never start the cook cycle. Either way, the machine looks perfectly healthy.
What you can safely check, and what we do
Here's your safe list. Run a one-minute test with a cup of tap water and see whether the water warms at all. Wiggle the door and feel whether the latch is sloppy. On an over-range model, pull the grease filter and wash it. Make sure the vent isn't blocked, and confirm nothing else on that circuit is dimming. That's it, that's the whole list. No, it's the opposite. It isn't producing microwave energy at all, which is exactly why your food stays cold. Leave it unplugged on the counter until someone can look at it.
Can I fix the door switch myself?
We don't recommend it. Those switches sit inches from a capacitor that holds a lethal charge even after you unplug the unit, so reaching in means working right beside it. That one's worth a service call.
